A Technology Roadmap Is Not a Wish List
April 28, 2026
Most IT roadmaps I see are really just prioritized backlogs with optimistic timelines. They track projects, but they rarely drive true business outcomes.
A genuine technology roadmap does something different. It connects investment decisions to measurable business results.
What Separates the Two
- Business outcome ownership — every major initiative has a clear “so that” statement tied to revenue, risk reduction, or operational performance.
- Prioritization discipline — ruthless focus on the vital few initiatives.
- Realistic sequencing that accounts for dependencies, resource constraints, and change management.
- Regular executive visibility — not just status reports, but decision-ready updates.
The Board Perspective
Boards don’t need a tour of your architecture diagrams. They need confidence that technology investments are aligned with strategy and that someone is making hard trade-off decisions.
Practical Advice
When building or refreshing your roadmap, start with the business outcomes you’re trying to enable in the next 12–24 months, then work backward to the technology capabilities required.
If your current roadmap feels more like a wish list than a strategic plan, or if you’re preparing for growth and need a clear, board-ready technology strategy, I’d be happy to discuss how we can help. Book a complimentary strategy conversation.
